Hawks I Miss: First Installment

As the season is off to a start, it's good to see former Hawks playing across the league. From time to time, it's good to see where they are now and reflect on days past.

Let's throw the spotlight on former Blackhawk defenseman James Wisniewski.

Why I miss him:

His lighthearted locker room banter, especially in interviews with Sarah Spain where he would usually poke fun about Kane not being able to grow any facial hair or about Burish being a pretty boy.

His scoreboard segments, like this one:

Why it's probably good we let him go:

While he's great on my fantasy hockey team for penalty minutes, our team could probably do without hits like this from last March, causing lengthy suspensions:

Consequently, I wonder if after the game he went out for beers with the guys to catch up. Do they leave it all out on the ice as part of the game? Or is Wiz just a stone cold douchebag?

Lastly, shenanigans like this are frowned upon, though hilarious. Not really good for PR. While you may not be the brightest player on the block, you sure do up the entertainment value when you step onto the ice. Here's to you.

The Wait is Almost Over

This hasn't been as long of a summer as many before for Hawks fans. Since the Hawks won the Stanley Cup in June, fans like me have been able to catch up with who has the cup, not to mention see the team online at a million public appearances around Chicago (the Cubs and Sox appearances alone have been numerous). It's been an active summer in terms of roster changes, especially the big change in goal to Marty Turco. And while I will really miss Byfuglien, Versteeg, Fraser, and Burish (some for talent, others for sheer entertainment), I'm looking forward to learning a whole new set of players and seeing them in action.

2 1/2 weeks until preseason, which I know doesn't count, but I'm so desperate for some hockey!

Hockey season is less than 4 months away...

Okay, I know it just ended (for the Blackhawks!), but winners and losers alike (sorry, Leafs) always look forward to next year. (The Cubs have already started.) The preseason Hawks schedule is up:

DateOpponentVenueTime (Central)
Wed, Sept. 22at Tampa Bay LightningMTS Centre (Winnipeg)7 pm
Fri, Sept. 24at Detroit Red WingsJoe Louis ArenaTBD
Sat, Sept. 25vs. Detroit Red WingsUnited CenterTBD
Tues, Sept. 28at Pittsburgh PenguinsConsol Energy Center6 pm
Thurs, Sept. 30at St. Louis BluesScottrade CenterTBD
Fri, Oct. 1vs. Pittsburgh PenguinsUnited CenterTBD
Sun, Oct. 3vs. St. Louis BluesUnited Center

The best part for me is that by the time these preseason games are happening, I will be really close to having the baby, if I haven't already. I'm really looking forward to having a new addition, and also not being pregnant anymore. I love that our first game is in Winnipeg. Is that a move on Bettman's part to see how many fans show up? Come on, man, just move the Coyotes. Or you know what? Go ahead and move Tampa Bay. They'll already be up there for the first game anyway, and who the hell cares about hockey in Florida?

Stanley's Tour of Chicago

They did it. The Blackhawks brought the cup home to Chicago. And I'm proud to say I was there for game 1 of the history that was made. I can't wait to go this Sunday on vacation to Chicago. Maybe we'll get a glimpse of the cup? Although I have gotten to see it a few times in Toronto at the IHHF, along with the Conn Smythe. I can't wait to go back and see Toews' name on that one.

So it's been passed around at Chicago bars, attended the a Cubs/Sox game at Wrigley, and been to California to be on the Tonight Show. Where to next?

While I'm not sure of the answer to that question, what the hell is Marian Hossa wearing?! (Check it out at :40)

I know you're not American, but what is that about?! He looks like an extra at the beginning of Borat where he's in Kazakhstan. What, is Hossa letting Ovechkin dress him now? It's the dark sunglasses, hat, and Blackhawks flag as a scarf at the ball game that get me. Well, if he's ridiculously hungover, I believe he has good reason. I noted that Patrick Kane sounded really hoarse on the Tonight Show. I'm sure it' s been non-stop parties, and why not? They're young, they deserve it, and let's face it folks: with our cap space issues, this is probably not a repeater for the 2010-2011 NHL season.

Game Five

So now it's even. Can the Blackhawks pull ahead for the lead today? That depends on some key elements.

  • Buff has to not let Pronger shut him down
  • More improvement in the Hawks passing game
  • Don't get called on dumb penalties (Eager, Versteeg, I'm looking at you)
  • Park in front of the net!
  • Run 'em ragged...we have more depth and will win out
  • Leighton just isn't that good
Home ice advantage should help, but let's seal the deal in six.

Game One - Stanley Cup Finals

It was unbelievable, and it was loud. Here's the proof: amazing.

A very sloppy, high scoring game 1, but a win, nevertheless. It was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, so we took it and headed the five hours to the UC for game 1. Seemed like there were some penalties that should have been called on the Flyers last night, but being in the nosebleeds, I suppose I could have been wrong.

Here are some pics:

On to the last one

I didn't blog after game 1 and we won. I didn't get to blog after the second game, and we won. After that, I was too superstitious to blog. So because I didn't, we won. Sure, believe that.

So on to the Broad Street Bullies. I have been most impressed with Niemi and Byfuglien. I can't wait to watch the game Saturday!

On to the next one

WCF, here we come! That's what you get for THIS.

Take a Deep Breath...

It's all gonna be okay. Sure, last game sucked so bad I thought I was watching a rerun of game 1 from last week, but let's look at Niemi. He's been kicking ass after a beatdown in the postseason. I think we can shut it down in game 6. We'll see tomorrow.

In other news, have you seen Kane lately?

It's like an 80's flashback. I feel like listening to the theme from Beverly Hills Cop. Seriously, just open another tab and listen to this while you have the sound down on Kane's interview. Fucking hilarious. I gotta say, it's working. It's even inspired a t-shirt:

You know you want one. Don't give me that bullshit about it disrespecting the Indian. It's awesome. I love the chewing on the mouthguard and the 20 cents woven in. I'd buy one, but being pregnant, I'm not going to throw away money on something I can only wear for a few months. Maybe the design will return. Check out the other designs at If you don't like any of the designs, check back in a few weeks as they cycle through.

Until then, may the hockey gods smile toothlessly down upon us. I think I'm gonna go watch some Miami Vice.

I could not be happier. Maybe we can finish off the Nucks and then the Sharks will commence with their usual post-season choke-fest.

In Byfuglien we trust.

High Five!!

Three in a row. Back to back hat-tricks by Hawks. Heading back home to Sweet Home Chicago. Buff has gotten into Luongo's head (and seemingly the team's what with all the penalties) and has proven to be an effective screen to thwart the Canucks yet again. High fives all around!

We've moved from terrible to painful.

Other than a steaming pile of crap. Why can't we just nail game 1 at the beginning of a round? That was a sound thrashing. Get some D, take some more shots, maybe put Burish in, and I'll see you tomorrow night. I say GOOD DAY, SIR!

I like My Catfish Well Done

While watching the Blackhawks wrap up the first round in 6 games, a few thoughts crossed my mind.
  • How did we blow that lead? It's like watching the Reds piss a game away.
  • Nice that Nashville fans are paying enough attention to boo every time Hossa touches the puck.
  • Were they really chanting "Hossa sucks?" Wow. Your team is benefiting so much from that.
  • WHO THROWS A CATFISH?! I guess it's some answer to the octopus, but it seems contrived. This franchise has been in existence since 1997. Someone decided to throw a catfish in 2003 and it stuck. What's the significance? You're in the south now, boy! We like catfish.'re at a HOCKEY GAME.
Well thank God THAT'S over. Now they are facing the Canucks. Do I smell a repeat Patrick Kane hat trick? It's got to smell better than dead catfish.

Now I remember what this feels like

The crazy feeling in my stomach on the edge of my bar stool, that feeling wedged snugly in between complete elation and agony...the Hawks are in the playoffs. Honestly, it would feel good to just have a commanding lead and plow through a team. But this is good in a way; it helps them not to get too cocky. Except maybe Kane, but that's just what he thrives on. And he deserves it after that last minute goal to make him a hero.

There's no way Hossa deserves a suspension. I think there was no intent to injure, he barely pushed the guy, and I think the action began far enough away from the boards. He was just trying to get to the puck. There's NO WAY this can be compared to the Ovechkin hit on Campbell. Look it up. Watch them. Quit listening to ESPN and decide for yourself. ESPN doesn't know dick about hockey.

Game 5 was the momentum we needed to get it done and end this early.

It's all about the Mullet

WOOHOO!!!! Hawks tie it up! Versteeg did step it up, although not scoring a goal. And evidently Kane (who has scored 2 of the 3 playoff goals) was right about the mullet. So he can't grow a beard, neither can I. Of course, that's because I'm a woman, but no judgement here. I don't care how much like Jersey trash he begins looking like, if he's scoring goals, he can skate down the ice with some redneck bubba teeth and a ratty Bon Jovi t-shirt with chili dog stains down the front.

Haven't seen it yet? Check it out:

There are no words to describe this. If you come up with some, please comment.

That was terrible

Friday was embarrassing. Seriously. I know that Nashville's goalie is good, I know that they have one of the best defenses in the league, but that was painful to watch in the third. The Blackhawks seemed to have no drive, and barely any control of the puck.

Perhaps we were just trying to fit in with the first round-first game upsets?

Ok, maybe the boys have had their playoff jitters and now that's done. Versteeg, I'm lookin' at you to step up. You haven't done shit lately. We lost our home ice advantage, but we can still smash them in the hillbilly podunk they call "smashville."

Well Well Well

I'm not dead after all. I am, however, pregnant - which is great, and which I won't discuss here because unlike many of my female cohorts, I really could care less about other people's kids. Throwing up and sleeping (though the former not immediately followed by the later - that's how Hendrix died, dude) sucked away the first three months of this year, but I'm back.

IT'S PLAYOFFS TIME!!! I'm going out tonight to Our Place to catch Chicago and inviting my Blackhawks brethren from the Ville (that's Louisville, ya'll), of which there are now 4 of us. I'm anticipating a helluva good start, and our 4th line to keep kicking ass.

In the meantime, here's something that reminds me of my first three months of the year.
